Commedia dell'arte is a genre of theater that appeared in Italy in the 16th century. It is the basis of acting in the West, with its archetypal characters (old misers, lovers, clever servants, boastful captains) and is based on a demanding and spectacular acting technique. Inspired by the framework of classic plays (such as those of Molière, Beaumarchais, Goldoni) or based on current issues, it allows us to question our society, the power dynamics in the family, in society and express universal human emotions.
With elements like juggling, acrobatics, fencing and mime, commedia is a comprehensive art form that appeals to adults and children alike. The festival is therefore designed for a family audience and also aims to reach those who are not used to theater.
The Nice International Commedia dell'arte Festival, organized by La Semeuse, includes shows, workshops and meetings.
It offers 10 performances, 2 master classes and a children's workshop in places such as the Théâtre de la Semeuse, the Center Culturel de la Providence, the Théâtre Francis Gag and various districts of Old Nice.
The focus is on accessibility and engagement with new audiences. This is why, in addition to performances in emblematic cultural places (such as the Palais Lascaris, the Francis Gag Theater, La Providence, etc.), the Festival is often present in the city's priority districts (QPV): Ariane, Windmills and Las Planas.
Commedia dell'arte, born during the Baroque era, also highlights the Baroque architectural heritage of Nice by animating and bringing emblematic places to life through parades.
