What is happening now: the Lignes d\u2019Azur notice<\/h2>\n

At the time of writing (21 October 2026), the immediate risk on the ground is local rather than aerial. The CFTC union filed a strike notice on 2 October with Lignes d'Azur<\/a> covering Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October 2026, affecting buses, trams and Mobil'Azur staff across the Nice metropolitan area. Service levels on such days are rarely known with certainty until shortly before, and a weekend notice lands exactly when many visitors arrive or leave.<\/p>\n

France has made these strikes more predictable than they used to be. Since the law validated by the Constitutional Council in December 2023, individual controllers must declare their intention to strike<\/a> in advance, which lets the civil aviation authority (DGAC) estimate staffing and ask airlines to trim schedules before passengers reach the airport. In practice, the 48-hour declaration means airlines usually know the scale of the damage by the day before.<\/p>\n

The cuts can be severe. For a national notice on 3 July 2026, the DGAC asked airlines to reduce schedules by up to 50 per cent<\/a> at several French airports. For the April 2026 notices, reporting on earlier comparable movements noted that the DGAC had requested cuts of up to 75 per cent<\/a>. Nice, as one of the busiest regional airports in the country, is routinely among those affected.<\/p>\n

The practical lesson is that the window between the notice and the strike is when decisions are made. Travelers who wait for the morning headlines are already behind those who watched their airline's app the day before.<\/p>\n

Not every strike is the same<\/h3>\n

An air traffic control affects national airspace, so switching carrier rarely helps. A strike by one airline's own staff behaves differently. When easyJet cabin crew walked out on 15 and 16 August 2026, around 144 cancellations were recorded across major European airports<\/a> in a single day's tally, with France a key pressure point. Those disruptions remain concentrated on one airline's flights, so a passenger on another carrier may be unaffected and a rebooked passenger may have options.<\/p>\n

For the person waiting to be collected, the difference matters less than you might think. Whichever strike it is, your arrival time moves, sometimes by many hours, and a driver who simply stands at a curb for a fixed slot is of little use. The French government's consumer information service sets out the rules plainly. A strike by the airline's own crew is more likely to leave the carrier liable.
