The road bends with every headland, it was built for sightseeing rather than speed, and it rewards a driver who is in no hurry.<\/p>\n What makes it unlike the other Riviera cornices is color. The Est\u00e9rel is volcanic. Its porphyry cliffs are a deep, rusty red, and they drop straight into water that shifts between turquoise and navy. Mont Vinaigre, the highest summit of the massif, stands at 618 meters according to France Balade's profile of the Est\u00e9rel<\/a>, though from the coast road you notice the cliffs long before the peaks.<\/p>\n There are two ways to run it. You can start in Saint-Rapha\u00ebl and finish in Cannes, or the reverse. We favor driving west to east, from Saint-Rapha\u00ebl towards Cannes, in the morning. The sea is then on your side of the car, the lay-bys and coves need no crossing of traffic, and the sun sits behind you and lights the rock. A direct car transfer from Nice to Cannes alone is a 30 to 40 minute affair outside rush hour. Adding the Est\u00e9rel loop turns a transfer into a journey. France Today identifies Boulevard de la Corniche d'Or as the D6098, with the coastal road continuing as the Route des Calanques and later the Route du Trayas. In practical terms you follow the D559 and then the D6098. Your driver knows this without looking, which is one small argument for hiring one.<\/p>\n A good Est\u00e9rel day is not a checklist. It is four or five deliberate stops, spaced so that the road itself stays the main event. These are the ones we would build a day around, in the order you meet them when driving west to east.<\/p>\n The route begins at Saint-Rapha\u00ebl, a resort whose center sits right on the sea at the foot of the Est\u00e9rel mountains. A few minutes along the coast, the Rocher du Dramont is the first of the red headlands. Le Dramont has a beach that is supervised in summer, and a footpath climbs to the semaphore on Cap Dramont for a panorama over the Gulf of Fr\u00e9jus. If your group includes children or elderly guests, this is the easiest first stop, because the walk can be as short as you wish.<\/p>\n Agay is the most sheltered bay on the route, with a long beach, caf\u00e9s and the closest thing to a village atmosphere between Saint-Rapha\u00ebl and Cannes. It is also one of the places where lifeguards are on duty in summer. We often suggest lunch here, because the restaurants are within a few meters of the car park and the bay gives the driver an easy place to wait.<\/p>\n Beyond Agay the road narrows and climbs, and Anth\u00e9or appears below with its railway viaduct set against the red rock. The coastal railway and the road were both carved out of the cliffs. France Balade notes that the construction required considerable works, which you can still read in the frequent crossings, viaducts and trenches along the way. It is a stop for photographs and for appreciating how stubborn the engineers of 1903 were.<\/p>\n The Trayas marks the Var and Alpes-Maritimes border, and it is where the small coves begin. These are not equipped beaches. They are unsupervised, usually reached by steps cut in the rock, and they are at their best out of season or early in the day. Bring water shoes if you plan to swim, and ask your driver to wait close to the staircase you choose.<\/p>\n The viewpoint at the Pointe de l'Observatoire, just before Th\u00e9oule, offers a last wide look back along the red coast. From there the road drops into Th\u00e9oule-sur-Mer and on to Mandelieu-la-Napoule, where the D6098 continues toward Cannes. In winter the light is crisp and the road almost empty. In spring and autumn the coves are quiet enough to enjoy alone. In summer the picture changes. The Var prefecture publishes the access restrictions on its website, with updates communicated the evening before, as set out in its wildfire risk document for the department<\/a>. In high-risk periods, paths and tracks inside the massif can be closed to walkers and vehicles. The coast road itself generally stays open, but the footpaths you plan to use may not. The sensitive rule is to check the prefecture page the evening before and again at breakfast, and to keep a second plan.
