Most guests reach a Monaco hotel through Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE), which lies 22 km from the Principality. By road the transfer takes about 25 minutes, and by helicopter about seven, according to the Monegasque government. A private chauffeur with a fixed 2026 rate of €90 to €140 per vehicle takes you from the arrivals hall to the hotel entrance without a change of vehicle. Trains and buses are cheaper and perfectly workable, provided you travel light and your hotel is close to a station.
This guide sets out each way in, what it demands of you, and how the last few hundred metres work once you are inside a very small, very steep and very busy city-state. We drive this route every day at TranspOnyx, so we have written it with the practical detail in mind.
Why hotel access in Monaco is different
Monaco covers a little over two square kilometres, and its hotels cluster in a handful of districts: Monte-Carlo around the Casino, the Port Hercule area in La Condamine, Fontvieille to the west, and the Larvotto seafront to the east. Distances on a map look trivial. In practice, one-way streets, steep gradients, tunnels and underground car parks mean the final approach often takes longer than guests expect, especially during a major event.
The calendar matters more here than in most destinations. During the Monaco Grand Prix, sections of the circuit close and hotel forecourts near the track are reached only by agreed routes. Cannes Film Festival, MIPIM, MIPCOM and Cannes Lions send thousands of delegates along the same corridor between Nice and the Principality, and those who stay in Monaco while working in Cannes sit in that traffic twice a day. ILTM follows in December. Whatever the week, the principle is the same: book the last leg of your journey before you land, and give the driver the exact hotel name and entrance you need.
From Nice airport to Monaco: the options compared
Four realistic options exist. The figures below come from official Monaco sources, apart from our own chauffeur rate, which is a fixed 2026 price per vehicle and not per person.
| Option | Journey time | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur | About 25 minutes by motorway | Door to door, fixed 2026 rate of €90 to €140 per vehicle |
| Helicopter | 7 minutes | Flight to the Principality, then a short onward drive to the hotel |
| Airport Express Line 80 | Varies with traffic | Links Nice airport and Monaco, then you walk or take a taxi from the stop |
| Train from Nice city | Around 22 minutes | Around 60 round trips daily, but you first reach Nice station |
The road time of 25 minutes and the helicopter time of seven minutes are published by the Government of Monaco. The existence of the Airport Express Line 80, and the high-speed and regional express trains that stop in Monaco, appears in the official 2026 Monaco guide. The comparison between rail and chauffeur time is covered in more depth in our piece on Nice to Monaco travel time.
The chauffeur transfer
For a guest with luggage, a chauffeur is the only option that removes every transfer point. The driver meets you at arrivals, loads the bags, and drives the A8 and the final descent into Monaco to the hotel door. Our airport transfers include flight monitoring, so a delayed arrival does not cost you the booking, and 60 minutes of free waiting time on airport pickups, which covers a slow queue at passport control or a late bag.
The 2026 fixed rate from Nice airport to Monaco and Monte-Carlo runs from €90 to €140 per vehicle, confirmed at booking. There is no surge pricing, so a Grand Prix weekend is quoted on the same basis as a quiet Tuesday in February. The range reflects the vehicle and the destination within the Principality. You can read more on the Nice airport to Monaco transfer page.
The helicopter
Seven minutes from Nice to Monaco is a genuine saving on a bad traffic day, and for guests arriving on a late flight before an early meeting it can transform the schedule. The helicopter lands at the Principality’s heliport in Fontvieille, so you still need a ground vehicle at the other end. We arrange that connection as part of our helicopter transfer Nice Monaco service, so that a driver is standing at the landing point with the right vehicle and the hotel already informed.

Train and bus
The rail link is the most economical way into the Principality. TER trains connect Nice and Monaco with around 60 round trips each day, and Ventimiglia, on the Italian side, is 26 minutes away. Monaco’s station is underground, with exits into the different districts linked by escalators, stairs or passages, and some exits have lifts. That last point matters if you travel with a large case, a pushchair or reduced mobility: ask the hotel which exit is closest and whether it has a lift.
On the road, route 600 runs from Nice to Menton via Monaco, and route 602 runs from Nice through Èze to Monaco. Both are scenic and inexpensive. They are better suited to day visitors than to guests arriving with a week of luggage.
The road in: A8, the three Corniches and where traffic bunches
Monaco is served by the A8 motorway, with exits 56, 57 and 58, and by three historic coastal roads: the Basse, Moyenne and Grande Corniche. The motorway is the quickest line in normal conditions. The Corniches are slower and far prettier, and a driver who knows the area will use them as a diversion when the A8 backs up near the border.

The pressure points are predictable. The morning and evening commuter flow between Nice, Èze and Monaco thickens the approach. Event weeks add to it. Anyone travelling between Monaco and Cannes for a conference should allow a considerably longer window than the map suggests, and this is where a driver on a by-the-hour booking earns his fee. Our mise à disposition is priced at €60 to €90 per hour in 2026, with the same fixed-rate principle: the figure is agreed before the car moves.
Once you are inside: hotel forecourts, car parks and walking
Most Monaco hotels have an entrance that can take a car for a few minutes, and a doorman who will take luggage. Not all have the space to hold a vehicle. This is where a professional driver differs from a self-drive visitor: we drop at the door, wait out of the way, and return when called.
If you drive yourself, note that Monaco has around 40 car parks, most of them underground. The Salines car park holds 1,800 spaces and offers pedestrian access to several neighbourhoods. The Galerie piétonne des Salines links the Exotic Garden area with La Condamine and Fontvieille, which spares you a long walk over uneven ground. The same source mentions Monabike stations and 10 free journeys on the CAM bus, useful for guests who do not want to use a car at all.
Hotel shuttles are a smaller part of the picture than visitors assume. According to the Principality’s green access guide, SBM hotels run shuttles between their own establishments, one operator offers a shuttle within Monaco, and the Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo has an electric shuttle. Several listed hotels also have electric vehicle charging points. If you travel in an electric car, confirm charging with the hotel before you arrive rather than on the forecourt.
Should you stay in Monaco or in Nice?
This is the question behind many of the searches for Monaco hotel access. A guest who books a Monaco hotel for a week and then finds that most of the Riviera is easier from Nice is not unusual. Nice has the airport, the largest choice of train services and a direct road to Cannes, Antibes and the ski resorts. Monaco has the address and the hotels.
Our advice is practical. If you are in Monaco for the Grand Prix, a gala, a yacht show or a meeting in the Principality, stay there and arrange a chauffeur for the arrival and departure. If you plan to explore, with days in Èze, Menton, Cannes or Provence, a Monaco base works well so long as a driver is part of the plan. A private day by car costs less than most visitors fear: our 2026 Monaco and Èze Express Tour is €350 to €500 for the vehicle, and a half-day à la carte tour of five hours is in the same range. Details are on our Onyx Tours page.
Guests arriving from Italy have a different pattern. Menton and the border are close, and the Nice to Menton and Italian border transfer covers that corridor. Our 2026 fixed rate from Nice airport to Menton and Beausoleil is €108 to €158 per vehicle.
Entering Monaco: passports, visas and border checks
Monaco has no routine border controls with France, and visitors cross by road or rail without stopping. You still need valid documents. For stays of under three months, foreign nationals need a passport and sometimes a visa, and EEA nationals may use a valid passport or identity card. Nationals of countries outside the EEA must hold a valid passport and, where required, a Schengen visa, and once the Schengen visa has been issued no additional formalities apply for Monaco.
What does this mean for a hotel guest? In practice, you pass through the French border at Nice airport and your Monaco transfer is an internal journey. A foreign ministry’s travel advice notes that there are no routine controls between France and Monaco, but travellers should be ready to show identification on request. Hotels will also ask for your passport or identity document at check-in, so keep it in your hand luggage and not in a case in the boot.
Another change affects the arrival day itself. The same advisory records that the EU Entry/Exit System became operational on 12 October 2025 at Schengen external borders, which can involve biometric registration for non-EU visitors. Allow extra time at Nice if you are entering the Schengen area for the first time on your trip; our drivers track the flight and wait up to 60 minutes free of charge at airport pickups. Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality and the length of your stay, so check with the Monegasque embassy or consulate that serves your country before you travel.
A chauffeur’s view of the arrival day
A typical arrival from London in late spring illustrates how this works in practice. The flight lands at Terminal 2 at NCE. Passport control takes a quarter of an hour. The driver is already at arrivals with a name board, and the Standard Sedan or Business Sedan, each for up to three passengers, is parked a short walk away. Luggage goes in the boot. The driver takes the A8 east, passes the exits to Èze and La Turbie, and the descent into the Principality begins roughly 20 minutes later. The hotel doorman is expecting the car because the driver has called ahead.
For a family of five or six, the right vehicle is Van 7 pax. For a wedding party or a delegation of eight, it is Van 8 pax. Every vehicle in our fleet is a Mercedes-Benz with Wi-Fi, air conditioning, chilled water and phone chargers. Child seats are available on request, and we recommend asking for one at the time of booking, not at the kerb. Our airport transfer checklist lists the details worth confirming before departure.
Events deserve their own planning. When you attend a conference or gala in the Principality, a hotel concierge will often be asked for several vehicles at the same hour. We coordinate multi-vehicle arrivals for events, weddings and corporate hospitality, and the approach is explained on our page about Nice airport transfers for Monaco events.
Our perspective
Guests often ask which route is best, and the honest answer is that it depends on the hour, the luggage and the hotel. What does not change is the value of certainty. A fixed price, a named driver who speaks your language and a car that is waiting when you walk out of arrivals remove three of the most common sources of stress on a Riviera trip.
At TranspOnyx we are licensed VTC professionals, and our drivers are bilingual in English and French as a minimum. Some also speak Italian, Spanish, Russian or Arabic. That matters in Monaco, where a guest may be dealing with a hotel, a yacht crew and a business contact in three different languages on the same afternoon.
We believe the last kilometre decides how a journey is remembered. A hotel forecourt, a one-way street and a tight schedule are not the moment to look for a taxi rank. Our fixed 2026 rates are confirmed at booking, per vehicle, so a group of three in a Business Sedan or eight in a Van 8 pax knows the cost before the flight departs. We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, because flights do not keep office hours.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from Nice airport to a Monaco hotel?
The official figure is 25 minutes by motorway over 22 km, or seven minutes by helicopter. In heavy traffic, which is common during the Grand Prix, MIPIM and the Cannes events, allow more. A chauffeur who monitors your flight will adjust for delays.
How much does a private transfer from Nice airport to Monaco cost in 2026?
Our fixed 2026 rate from Nice airport to Monaco and Monte-Carlo is €90 to €140 per vehicle, confirmed at booking. It is per vehicle, not per person, and there is no surge pricing. The final figure depends on the vehicle and the exact hotel.
Can I enter Monaco without a passport?
There are no routine border checks between France and Monaco, but you should still carry valid identification. EEA nationals may use a passport or identity card, and other nationalities need a passport and, where required, a Schengen visa. Your hotel will ask for a document at check-in.
Is there a train from Nice to Monaco?
Yes. TER trains run between Nice and Monaco with around 60 round trips a day. Monaco’s station is underground, with several district exits, some of which have lifts, so ask your hotel which one suits you best.
